WWE Night of Champions

With a cheeseburger in one hand and a Corona that’s almost finished in the other, I took the time away from my BBQ to check out WWE Night of Champions.

There was so much speculation about who would be the tag team partner that Chris Jericho chooses. Who in their right mind would have guessed that the Big Show would’ve who Jericho chooses to be his partner. Nearly dropped the burger, I was so shocked. They went up against Legacy in a match for the unified tag team championship belt. Legacy wouldn’t have been able to beet Jericho and Edge, (Jericho’s original partner, until Edge suffered an injury requiring surgery) let alone Jericho and the Big Show. Honestly, this is a shocker. Jericho and Mr. RKO Randy Orton was the first tandem that came to mind. Then Shawn Michaels, and then maybe the return of a wrestler i.e. Chris Masters. (Hint Hint)

Jeff Hardy is back on top of the championship mountain. He defeated the newly turned heal (bad guy in wrestling) CM Punk. Finally, or at least for the time being, we are done watching this joke of a champ. He just fits the mold of an Intercontinental champ. Punk literally lacks the charisma it takes to be a successful champion and a heal at that. But Hardy on the other hand has the flare and the charisma that goes with being a champion. Isn’t he now the youngest to hold both the WWE championship and the World Heavyweight championship? Answer, yes he is. But back to last night. Punk’s eye “injury” wasn’t the case; Jeff Hardy was just faster, smarter, just plane old better. This is why he’s now on top and everyone on the Smackdown roster is looking up at him. But don’t get too comfortable Mr. Hardy, because one John Morrison is looking over your shoulders.

Now if you saw Monday night Raw, you see that Randy Orton is still the WWE champion. How in the world is he still champion? Did HHH and John Cena lie down and let Randy win? Not likely. Of course Randy did his in ring thing by getting these wrestlers off their game for a bit, but like the afore mentioned Hardy, Orton was just better, but also you know his lackeys Legacy interfered in the match. But if we know Orton, he’ll confess to one thing, he is still the WWE champion.

Im not going to spoil your appetite, especially if you didn’t watch Night of Champions yourself, your going to just have to order it and watch. That’s if you want details and to see what move connected where. Until next week, make sure you scratch your sports itch.

Yankee See Yankee Do

Now would you look at that? The Yankees are in first place again.

Call it a mid-summer surge. With the Bronx Bombers sweeping the Detroit Tigers over the weekend and sweeping the Orioles, the reeling Boston Red Sox are once again looking up at these Yankees. What makes this even sweeter, the Yankees were have said to be left for dead, not being able to compete with Boston(losing every game so far against them) and now they are in the mix to try and trade for the coveted Roy Halladay of the Blue Jays. Halladay kept the Bo Sox on pins and needles when he faced them over the weekend. The pitching for the Yankees is said to be weak, so adding Halladay along with CC Sabthia and A.J. Burnett to the starting rotation, will cause problems for any team, never mind the Sox.

After being swept before the All-Star break by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Yankees put it in true second half form by wracking up six straight games. On the other hand, the Red Sox have lost five straight. This is something that usually happened in the Joe Torre era. Not so much in the Joe Girardi era. They finished up the Baltimore Orioles completing the sweep.

Now they are looking at the Oakland Athletics. They begin a four-game weekend series with them, with the 9-6 Sabathia (their ace for now) facing the 2-6 Vin Mazzaro. Their offense is kicking right now and if you are the opposing pitcher, you had better hit your spots, or A-Rod and the rest of the boys will make you pay. SO you want to go after their weak pitching, I think not. In their current 6-game win streak their pitchers have given up a total of 14 runs. The most runs charged to them came in their final two games against the Orioles. They won both games 6-4. 4 runs being the most runs charged to a pitching staff within a 6-game streak are phenomenal. Hopefully their Bats and pitching keep up.

On a lighter note, the Red Sox made a move yesterday to try and keep the Yankees in their reach. They traded for Adam Laroche from the Pittsburgh Pirates and ironically enough, they traded for outfielder Chris Duncan from the St. Louis Cardinals, which is New York Yankee first baseman Shelley Duncan’s brother. Will they work? Wait until October and then we will see.
